Some facts about the British General Stores.
*The Store is modelled on a 1960’s English corner shop;
we wanted to create a feeling of nostalgia
for our customers who have lived in The Netherlands for a number of years.
Apparently it works well, and is a good all round cure for those
of you who are feeling a little home-sick.
The shop is not automated; everything is done by human hand (1 pair to be exact).
BGS is now the longest running shop in Amsterdam specialising in U.K. imports.
We have been successfully importing British wares for over 10 years.
We stock over 3,000 lines (a.k.a. The Shop that’ thinks it’s a Tardis)
We use over 35 U.K. Wholesalers. (Supplying over 140 different teas,
80 biscuits, 13 oatcakes, 12 Dettol products, and 10 different ways
to buy baked beans – the selection is too large to keep updated)
BGS is owner managed and has none of the
commitments that a chain store or franchise has.
It is our policy to discount anything left with a short shelf life –
(if you do find anything on our shelves that we might have missed –
you will win a free Cadbury’s flake)
If we don’t have it – we will try to help you to locate the product elsewhere.
We charge the same as my mum’s local Tesco store for a
REGULAR PACK OF Walkers Crisps! (40p or 50c)
Our wide range of cards and postcards from 50 cents cover most occasions.
We hold the biggest selection of British Humour cards in town.
Like most major supermarkets and food stores in Amsterdam
We keep a shop cat, and can guarantee you that we are a mouse free Zone.
Late night shopping on THURSDAY did not create enough interest,
so if you do need to visit us out of normal shop hours please phone –
arrangements can be made.
We keep a whole collection of Union Jack and England –
St George flags, banners and party stuff. From 50 cents
(biggest flag we have is only € 7.50 - below U.K. price)

But buy early shoppers,we always sell out before we close

Over the years a number of irregular customers have requested a list of my stock.
With so many British goods here in the shop this is a very difficult task.
So to keep some people happy I have compiled a list – of the more popular products.
Remember. If you are travelling a distance for just one item,
it would be wise to confirm that I have the product in stock first.
I am happy to reserve an item for collection later (This is within a reasonable time period)
For those of you who prefer shopping over the internet,
I should remind you that this is a shop, a touchy feeley place,
where customers choose/ collect shopping items, pay for them and leave.
(circa 1960’s) We do not charge for carriers at present,
and supply eco-friendly bags on request.
(At a later date we will be charging for bags
proceeds to go to our new project in Ghana.)
